About the Freight House

The building

The Freight House is a railway goods shed built in 1889 for the Great Eastern Railway, the year the line reached Rochford. Goods sheds were the warehouses of the railway age: wagons were shunted inside, and goods were transferred between rail and road under cover. The building’s long, high hall, thick brick walls, timber roof and wide doorways all come from that purpose.

The railway line to Southend Victoria still runs past the building, and Rochford station is next door.

Later uses

The project

The building is owned by Rochford District Council. Its return to use as an events space, workshop, museum and community hub forms part of the council’s Cultural and Visitor Economy Strategy 2025 to 2030. TODO: confirm this wording with the council.

The project is led by a small team of volunteers working with East Essex Hackspace, South East Community Hub and the council. See the partners page for who is involved.

What is planned

• A hireable event hall on the ground floor, with step-free access, for community events, talks, markets, performances, classes and private hire.
• A community workshop and makerspace run by East Essex Hackspace.
• A local museum telling the story of the railway, the building and the town.
• Space for community groups to meet.

Timeline

• 2025: strategy adopted; volunteer group formed.
• 2026: lease agreed; first events in the hall; this website launched.
